Mothers are important, and we should celebrate them every day, not just on Mother's Day. God recognized this when He chose women to bring life into the world.
Psalm 139:13-16 tells us that while God created us, he did so in our mother’s womb. Mothers are special. They create life and make sacrifices for their children every day.
A mother’s love for her own children is unconditional and never-ending.
Our mothers comfort and guide us throughout our lives, and they can teach us to live a life full of grace and praise for God. God calls on a mother to be full of strength, wisdom, and courage all the days of her life.
In this article, we’ll take a look at what the Bible says about mothers, as well as nine Mother’s Day Bible verses you can share with your mother on her special day.
Many Bible verses tell us to praise the Lord for our mothers.
Some of them talk about a mother’s love for her children, while others focus on a mother’s strength in the face of adversity. Genesis 3:20 captures the importance of mothers when Adam describes Eve as the "mother of all living."
As early as the Old Testament, God tells people to “honor your father and your mother,” (Exodus 20:12), and the sentiment is repeated in Leviticus 19:3: “Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father.”
The Bible also instructs mothers and fathers to teach their children about God diligently:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” (Deuteronomy 6:5-7).
A good mother is closely involved in her children’s lives and teaches them how to develop life skills and to grow in their faith. These sentiments are echoed in Ephesians 6, which tells parents to raise their children in the “training and instruction of the Lord.”
In 2 Timothy 1:5, we learn that Timothy’s faith came from his mother, Eunice, and her mother, Lois' influence.
Timothy’s mother, Eunice, was born into the Jewish faith, but she and her mother both converted to Christianity. Eunice regarded it as her sacred duty to educate her son in the word of God.
John 19 tells us about Jesus' love for His mother and His concern about her as He was suffering on the cross.
This scene in John 19 tells us about the last interaction between Jesus and His mother, just before His death. It’s a powerful moment in scripture and captures the essence of a mother’s unconditional love.
Motherhood is a blessing for both older women and younger women alike, and many consider their children to be Mother's Day gifts.
The Bible is vocal about the importance of family and a mother's teaching in Christian life. Psalm 127 talks about how children are a gift or “a heritage from the Lord.”
The idea of a mother’s love for her children being unconditional is captured beautifully in the Bible, particularly 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, which tells us that “Love is patient, love is kind.”
We can experience God’s love through our mother’s love, as our moms are created in God’s image.
The Bible often compares the unconditional love of a mother with Jesus Christ's unconditional love for us. In Luke 13:34, Jesus says:
"How many times I wanted to put my arms around all your people just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings...”
Moms are at the forefront of teaching kids about the word of God and modeling Christian ways of living in their own homes to their children.
We should honor our mothers for giving us life, showing unconditional love, and working as hard as they do.
We can offer praise to our moms, not just on Mother's Day but every day.
Consider writing any of these Bible verses in your mom’s Mother's Day card or sharing them with her any day of the year.
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way, it is not irritable or resentful, it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)
“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you” (Isaiah 49:15).
“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all” (Proverbs 31:25-30).
“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness” (Proverbs 31:26-27).
“Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck” (Proverbs 1:8-9).
“Let your father and mother have joy, and let her who gave birth to you rejoice” (Proverbs 23:25).
“For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13).
“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6).
“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem” (Isaiah 66:13).

The Bible tells us that we can experience Christ's love for us through our mother’s enduring and unconditional love. Our mothers are made in God’s image — as are we.
